“This is an exciting day in the history of InforSense,” said CEO David Bennett, in announcing that the British firm is being acquired by ID Business Solutions (IDBS), another privately held, profitable British software company.

IDBS is the larger of the two organizations, and provides a series of secure and searchable data management solutions in many industries, including but not limited to life sciences. IDBS is a past recipient of the Queen's Award for Enterprise and Innovation.

Bennett says that the acquisition is “very good news for our customers,” in that it provides them with enhanced sales and R&D support, while maintaining the InforSense brand name and product lines. The merger with IDBS will provide access to a broader portfolio of data management products.

Bennett says “IDBS is now the first organization in the R&D sector to provide the entire spectrum of products for data capture, storage, integration, retrieval, analysis, and visualization.” Bennett adds: “There is great synergy with InforSense, not only in the product lines but in our overall philosophies of product quality, business ethics and customer support… Our goal is to build on this synergy to make the products even more compatible, for the maximum benefit to all of our R&D customers.”

IDBS provides data management solutions in the collection of contextual data. Its key products for the biology and chemistry markets include the E-Workbook suite, ActivityBase, and Decision Support. InforSense's rapid data integration technologies and Web-based interactive analytics should complement IDBS’ secure, context-rich data management solutions.

The sale to IDBS comes just six months after InforSense founder Yike Guo stepped down as CEO and assumed the role of chief technology officer and head of innovation. Guo will now assume the role of Chief Innovation Officer at IDBS. John O’Connell, Chairman of InforSense, said he was “delighted to see InforSense become part of a visionary software company with proven expertise in the life sciences domain. The market can only react positively to the emergence of the first single end-to-end R&D informatics solution provider.”

Neil Kipling, CEO and founder of IDBS, said his firm’s existing domain expertise and 20-year track record would be enhanced by InforSense acquisition. “This is a major enabling step towards becoming the number one informatics partner of R&D worldwide. An additional facet of this acquisition is the opportunity to cement a strategic informatics research relationship with Imperial College. The combination of our rigorous software development and powerful new research capabilities creates a groundbreaking new organization.”

IDBS says it will expand its large scale data integration activities to support international data sharing and broaden its life sciences portfolio into areas such as biomarker development and personalized medicine. IDBS has also announced a separate deal to provide data sharing solutions to the Department of Chemistry at the Univesrsity of Cambridge -– the start of an ongoing informatics collaboration that will provide leading-edge technologies for commercialization.

Bennett says the InforSense technology and market momentum were key factors in attracting the offer from IDBS. Work on integrating the companies will be spelled out in the coming months.
