Wireless chip-maker Qualcomm Inc has acquired intellectual property assets from GestureTek in a bid to expand its smartphone product portfolio.
The deal will see Qualcomm take ownership of select assets related to gesture recognition technology, which allows manufacturers to develop intuitive user interfaces based on natural human gestures, as well as key engineering resources.
GestureTek will retain other assets which relate to its gesture-controlled public display and digital signage business.
The financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
"Applications processors are enabling a range of new ways for consumers to interface with their home entertainment and mobile devices," said Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president and group president of Qualcomm.
"Our acquisition of key technology and assets from GestureTek will strengthen Qualcomm's smartphone product portfolio and enable our customers to launch products with new and compelling user experiences."
Gesture recognition technology will now be integrated into Qualcomm's current and next-generation Snapdragon processors.
