Dell announced today (September 6th) that it will partner with Chinese search website Baidu to produce hardware such as mobile handsets and tablet devices.
The US company is the world's second biggest manufacturer of personal computers.
China has over 900 million mobile subscribers and the industry is dominated by Apple and native computer company Lenovo.
Reuters reports that Dell would not provide a timeline for production, but that local media quote sources suggesting manufacturing will begin in November.
Sandy Shen, a research director for Gartner, told the news agency: "Dell has got nothing to lose. They don't have a big mobile presence, so by partnering Baidu, they will probably get some momentum for their mobile products."
Baidu, the largest Chinese company of its kind, recently launched the Yi Platform, a new mobile application based on Google's Android.
Wang Jing, vice-president of Baidu, told the Financial Times that it was possible the company might launch its own unique platform in the future.
