Merger speculation is rife in the software market today following the announcement that antivirus developer McAfee and data storage firm CommVault are to join forces.
The move, which is thought to have been made in order for companies to compete better against joint rival Symantec, will see the duo put together "an integrated data and security management solution".
A press release issued by the firms stated: "The McAfee-CommVault solution will enable mutual customers to monitor corporate data for increased security and compliance with simplified policy management."
Search Storage referred to the agreement as a "virtual merger" and quoted market analyst Lauren Whitehouse as saying that deals such as these typically lead to actual mergers further down the line.
The news provider used figures from Yahoo! Finance that suggested McAfee is large enough to acquire CommVault given its market cap estimate of $4.54 billion (£2.8 billion) compared to the latter's $408.3 million.
