Hynix Semiconductor has denied claims that it is interested in acquiring German chipmaker Qimonda.
Speaking to Reuters, a spokesperson for the South Korean business stated that there was no truth in the rumours that it was considering a bid.
Word that a takeover was in the offing started when Saxony state premier Stanislaw Tillich told German business paper Handelsblatt that a deal was being planned.
"The electronics group Hynix was already rescued once by the South Korean state bank and now has emerged as interested in Qimonda," he was quoted as saying.
However, it seems that the rumour is untrue, although Qimonda has indicated that it is in talks with potential partners.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Numunyx has put plans to increase its holding in a joint venture with Hynix on hold.
Numunyx had been due to purchase $50 million (£33 million) worth of shares in the Hynix-Numonyx Semiconductor venture but this will not now happen until next year, Reuters reported.
