A merger between Channel 4 and rival broadcaster Five should only be considered as "a last resort", according to the firm.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, a spokesperson for Channel 4 explained that such a deal had been suggested in the past but was dismissed as unworkable.

The representative stated that this happened because of fears a private shareholder in the channel would dilute its focus on public service broadcasting.

"It is not clear how a merger with Five, or any other commercial entity, would allow Channel 4 to continue making a public service contribution at current levels," he said.

The insider added that a deal with a business similar to Channel Four would make more sense and suggested BBC Worldwide as one such business.

BBC Worldwide is the broadcaster's commercial arm, although it still has public service commitments.

Last month, the Times reported that politicians and regulators were discussing the possibility of a merger between BBC Worldwide and Channel 4.ADNFCR-1833-ID-18956024-ADNFCR
