Ericsson is to implement a metro aggregation network for the Taiwanese telecom operator Chunghwa Telecom (CHT).
The Swedish telecommunications giant's contract with CHT - Taiwan's largest telecoms firm - is to provide high-quality broadband services for fixed and mobile customers.
CHT suggests there will be 80 per cent coverage of the broadband network in Taiwan by 2011 - CHT intends Ericsson's Optical Multi-Service (OMS) product to be a key part in its attempts to secure a chunk of the market.
OMS improves networks and connections, eliminating bottlenecks and improving reliability and quality.
Stefan Johansson, president of Ericsson Taiwan, says the cooperation between the two firms signals a "milestone" for Taiwan's telecoms industry.
"We are happy that CHT has selected Ericsson's innovative solutions to grow with its business and this further cement the partnership between the two companies," he adds.
This week Ericsson announced the completion of the merging of its semiconductor operations with STMicroelectronics, forming a new leader in wireless technologies.
