In a cross-continental tie-up, Useful and ThinNetworks have announced a contract to supply Brazilian schools with thousands of virtualised desktops.

The two companies will supply 356,800 desktops for Brazil's 5,560 municipalities and according to Userful the contract represents the world's largest Linux deployment.

Userful stresses the low costs it can provide with its desktop virtualisation service - the firm claims to save 60 per cent on up-front costs and 80 per cent in annual power for the Brazilian government.

Technology from Userful enables multiple users to work on the same computer by attaching extra basic hardware, such as monitors or mice.

Tim Griffin, president of Userful, says he is happy to be part of the "historical" project.

"At just $50 [£35] per additional seat for the PC sharing hardware and software, Userful Multiplier is the best solution for schools, businesses and governments wanting to maximise their IT investment," he comments.

Userful recently celebrated its desktop receiving a five star review on the Bright Hub forum.
