Investment must be made in high-performance telecommunications technology, it has been claimed.
According to a study by CMA, 94 per cent of businesses believe this is required across Britain if the UK is to compete on a global scale.
Eco-friendly technology is also important to firms, with 76 per cent of telecoms companies asked stated they regard climate change as an important issue.
Glenn Powell, chief executive for the CMA, commented that this shows the industry has been correct in its efforts to become more environmentally-friendly.
Elsewhere in the study, 95 per cent said the UK needs to act to improve its internet infrastructure to move back into the top ten broadband countries in the world.
Mr Powell added: "This shows the urgency with which the measures proposed by the recent interim Digital Britain report are needed."
In other telecoms news, LG Electronics is set to develop energy-saving mobile phones with the use of mirasol display technology.
