A major telecommunications group has launched a scheme to develop energy-saving mobiles.
LG Electronics has agreed a deal with US group Qualcomm MEMS Technologies to produce handsets using mirasol display equipment.
By deploying this technology less power is used due to mirasol's ability to reflect light, which will also improve the battery life of devices.
DooWhan Sang, vice president for the South Korean business, commented on the benefits of using such alternatives to traditional sources.
He added: "With the display's low-power capabilities, LG customers are able to take advantage of sophisticated mobile applications for longer periods of time and view it across a range of lighting environments."
Jim Cathey, vice president of business development for Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, stated there is sufficient demand in the mobile telecoms sector for products which "deliver compelling user experiences".
In related news, the US-firm recently revealed plans to work on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System devices with Nokia.
