Channel 4 could have its sales operation merged with that of a rival broadcaster by the end of the year, it has been suggested.

Outgoing chief executive Andy Duncan believes negotiations concerning a possible merger will be concluded before his departure.

Speaking to Marketing Magazine, Mr Duncan did not say which competitor would be involved in the deal, although admitted that his main focus prior to his departure would be commercial partnerships.

He also hinted that Channel 4 could soon have a share of the licence fee with the BBC.

Mr Duncan announced his resignation as chief executive of the channel last week.

He is expected to leave his position, which he has occupied since 2004, before the end of the year.

His departure has been linked to a failure to secure future funding for the channel, which like many broadcasters is struggling to finance its operations in the changing broadcast media sector following the emergence of the internet.
