Mobile backhaul networks specialist Tellabs has announced its intention to acquire WiChorus, an industry leader in Smart 4G packet core infrastructure products.
The move is part of Tellabs' drive to meet the projected growth in demand for mobile internet services with scalable, next-generation network architectures capable of delivering 3G and 4G services.
It is hoped that the combination of the two firms will create enhanced 3G/4G mobile networks that will revolutionise mobile internet and achieve considerable savings for mobile carriers.
Robert W Pullen, president and chief executive officer of Tellabs, said the deal "complements, differentiates and advances our growth solutions portfolio", which already includes Tellabs Mobile, Optical and Business Solutions.
"Our customers are excited about this combination, since they can deliver rich, distinctive personalised user experiences such as mobile internet, video and commerce," he added.
In August, Tellabs announced its intention to actively repurchase up to $200 million (£122 million) of its common stock over the next four financial quarters.
