The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has requested to review the planned telecoms merger between Orange and T-Mobile in the UK, over fears that the deal could restrict competition between networks.
If the request is granted, the OFT intends to examine the proposed joint venture with a view to deciding whether it should be handed to the Competition Competition for further investigation.
Conrad Longmore, editor of the Mobile Gazette, said that although he believes the proposed joint venture will harm competition, it would still leave four operators battling for dominance so the overall effect will be limited.
He went on to say that T-Mobile's financial in the UK is probably not sustainable on a long-term basis, making it likely that a merger would occur at some time.
"However, 3 is also in a weak position and there may be further pressure towards consolidation which almost definitely would cause regulatory problems," added Mr Longmore.
