Canadian wireless device company Research in Motion (RIM), best known as the developer of the Blackberry smartphone, has announced that it has entered an agreement under which it will acquire QNX Software Systems.
The deal is expected to further strengthen QNX's penetration in the automotive sector, as well as enhancing customer experience between smartphones and in-vehicle audio and entertainment systems.
Dan Dodge, chief executive officer of QNX, said that the combined company, following the closure of the deal within 35-45 days, will create a platform for the next generation of connected and embedded devices.
"Moreover, RIM will give us the best of all possible mandates: to continue on our innovation path and to increase investment in our core products, professional services, and go-to-market channels," he added.
In March last year, RIM completed the acquisition of Certicom, a provider of security solutions, at a cash price of CAD$3 (£1.94) per share.
