Worldwide IT spending will grow by 5.3 per cent this year, according to the latest forecast from Gartner, which may lead to an increase in merger and acquisition activity in the sector.
The research firm has predicted that the global IT spend will reach $3.4 trillion in 2010, following strong sales in the fourth quarter of 2009 and evidence of a resilient hardware supply chain in the first quarter of this year.
Of the four major IT spending category segments, hardware took the steepest dive in 2009, Gartner research director George Shiffler said - although it is now positioned to enjoy one of the strongest rebounds.
"Consumer PC spending will contribute nearly four percentage points of hardware spending growth in 2010, powered by strong consumer spending on mobile PCs," he went on to say.
It follows news that Oracle has announced the $685 million (£448 million) acquisition of drug trials software maker Phase Forward.
