Computer security giant Symantec has announced the $1.28 billion (£0.88 billion) acquisition of Verisign's identity and authentication business.
The acquisition, which includes the Secure Sockets Layer, Certificate, Public Key Infrastructure and other products and services offered by Verisign, is expected to close around September.
Enrique Salem, president and chief executive officer of Symantec, said the evolving threat landscape means both businesses and individuals are increasingly looking for solutions that allow them to access information without compromising on privacy.
"With the combined products and reach from Symantec and VeriSign, we are poised to drive the adoption of identity security as the means to provide simple and secure access
to make online experiences more user-friendly and hassle-free," he commented.
Last month, Symantec broadened its data protection capabilities with the acquisition of PGP Corporation and GuardianEdge Technologies, the former for $300 million (£207 million) and the latter for $70 million (£48 million).
