Orange and T-Mobile have announced that they will allow their customers to use the two networks at no extra cost.

The announcement is the first obvious, usable consumer benefit from the newly-merged companies' new entity, Everything Everywhere, details of which were first announced in early July this year.

From next month, 30 million customers of Orange and T-Mobile will be opened up to the two networks, meaning they can send texts and make calls to more places in the UK at no extra cost.

Tom Alexander, chief executive officer of Everything Everywhere, said: "This is the beginning of an ambitious plan to give our customers instant access to whatever they want, wherever they are - instant access to everything everywhere."

Consumers will benefit from a choice between the two providers: if the signal is lost mid-call on the existing network, they will automatically pick up the signal from the sister network, where it's available.

However, the enhanced coverage only applies to pay as you go, pay monthly and business services (which use 2G signals), meaning customers using mobile web (3G) will (for the time being at least) miss out.
