International Business Machines (IBM) will acquire California-based Blade Network Technologies (Blade), a data routing products provider.
Financial details of the transaction have not yet been disclosed.
The move is a signal that technology giants are seeking to broaden their range of products, offering customers more diverse solutions that stand apart from their traditional offerings.
"Blade will help IBM better integrate networks with its systems, optimising them for workloads that require high-speed and low-latency performance such as cloud computing and business analytics," said Brian Truskowski, general manager, IBM System Storage and Networking.
Blade provides tools, such as blade server and top-of-rack switches, to help firms manage cloud computing systems. Many of its customers are listed on the Fortune 500, spread across sectors like telecoms, education and healthcare.
The acquisition is forecast to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2010.
Last week IBM announced the acquisition of Netezza, a data warehouse solutions business, for $27 (£13.3) per share, or $1.7 billion.
