IP systems provider ShoreTel has acquired Agito Networks, a phone services solutions provider, for approximately $11.4 million (£7.2 million).

Agito offers its business customers a platform, called RoamAnywhere, which allows them to adopt voice and unified communications through their mobile phones, regardless of network provider.

ShoreTel, which provides voice over internet protocol and remote working technologies, said its acquisition will push it further into the blossoming smartphone market. It will particularly tailor its products for BlackBerry, iPhone, iPad, Nokia, and Windows-Mobile devices.

"This is a key strategic investment that creates a significant differentiator for ShoreTel in enterprise mobility," said Don Girskis, interim chief executive of the firm.

The chief executive added that while desire for smartphones continues to "skyrocket", poor network coverage is still an issue in some areas, a flaw it intends to capitalise on.

"We free users to use any network (Wi-Fi or cellular), leveraging the power of the desk phone, and taking advantage of industry-leading call quality and call controls from their smartphone," Mr Girskis said.

Commenting on the transaction, Rob Arnold, an analyst at Frost and Sullivan, said the deal would mean lower costs for customers.ADNFCR-1833-ID-800138121-ADNFCR
