Research in Motion (RIM), the maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, has announced the acquisition of Swedish user interface firm The Astonishing Tribe (TAT).
Terms have not been disclosed.
The cutting-edge Malmo-headquartered company creates interfaces for a range of screens and mobile devices and designed the first ever colour mobile phone screen.
It has worked with telecoms firms Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Samsung and supports developers of the Android platform.
David Yach, RIM's chief technology officer, said: "We're excited that the TAT team will be joining RIM and bringing their talent to the BlackBerry PlayBook and smartphone platforms."
According to Reuters, RIM has brought TAT in to help it improve the look of its mobile interfaces ahead of the release of its PlayBook tablet product.
While the firm's BlackBerry device has been successful, it has tended to appeal to business customers, meaning RIM is missing out on a large section of the general consumer tech market.
Commenting on the deal on its blog, Paul Blomdahl, co-founder of TAT, said: "Today we're very excited as we are announcing that we’re taking a huge leap towards our vision to help create a full user experience for a great line of devices and products."
