Online auction website eBay has furthered its move into mobile networking with the acquisition of Critical Path Software, a mobile application developer that has been working with eBay for more than two years.
Terms have not been disclosed.
Portland, Oregon-based Critical Path worked with eBay to develop mobile apps like the popular eBay for iPhone, which has been downloaded more than 14 million times since its release in 2008.
Other iPhone applications include StubHub, eBay Classifieds and Shopping.com.
"We're very serious about innovating in mobile commerce, and this acquisition underscores our commitment to bringing the very best and brightest in the field to eBay," said Mark Carges, chief technology officer and senior vice president, global products, at eBay Marketplaces.
eBay wants to look at ways to increase mobile shoppers' access to the more than 200 million auction listings available globally at any given time on its website.
Recent research released by eBay claims UK eBay users are increasingly becoming mobile shoppers, or 'Moppers'. The firm said UK 'Moppers' download 36,000 of its iPhone apps every week and buy up to 80,000 items every day – the highest in Europe.
Globally, 'Moppers' are expected to spend over $1.5 billion (£960 million) though its mobile apps this year alone, eBay said.
