US computing solutions firm Citrix Systems has acquired German web conferencing software company Netviewer, as Citrix looks to expand its SaaS operations in Europe.

As part of the deal, Netviewer will become part of Citrix Online, the online services division of Citrix Systems. The acquisition will accelerate Citrix Online's global expansion and extend its SaaS leadership in Europe.

Karlsruhe-headquartered Netviewer provides tools that enable internet users to share their display screen live with others – so texts, graphics and other documents can be jointly-edited and discussed.

Its real-time communication tools allow companies from all over the world to talk to each other, significantly reducing travel costs. With over 18,000 customers including BMW, Bayer and Deutsche Telekom, Netviewer is one of Europe's leading web conferencing firms.

Founded in 1989, Citrix, which is based in Santa Barbara, California, provides virtual computing solutions that help companies deliver IT as an on-demand service. It served more than 230,000 organisations around the world.

On completion of the transaction Netviewer's Robert Gratzl will become vice president and general manager for Citrix Online.

"SaaS-based collaboration and IT Services have been key to our growth story," said Brett Caine, senior vice president of Citrix's online services division.ADNFCR-1833-ID-800409596-ADNFCR
