Harris Corporation, a maker of telecommunications equipment, says it will acquire Carefx, a leading healthcare information technology firm, for $155 million (£95 million).
Harris is eyeing a foothold in the commercial healthcare market.
Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, US, Carefx was formed in 2002 and has 250 employees. Its patient information aggregator software, called Fusionfx, is used in more than 800 hospitals around the world, including Cambridge University Hospitals, a leading NHS Foundation Trust in the UK.
Harris provides a range of healthcare intelligence products, and counts various US government departments among its customers.
"This acquisition will enable Harris to provide an expanded range of interoperability solutions to both government and commercial healthcare providers," said Howard L Lance, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Harris Corporation.
"Carefx serves high-growth markets. Their product suite and sales channels will position Harris to deliver trusted, comprehensive workflow integration that ultimately leads to better care and lower healthcare costs."
The deal is expected to close later in the year.
This month, Vinay Patel, senior software engineering manager at Harris, was named one of the top 100 IT leaders for 2011 in Computerworld.
