Electronics giant Sony has acquired UK-based Hawk-Eye Ltd, which specialises in providing tracking technology for sports events and broadcasters.
Hawk-Eye's systems, well-known for their use in Grand Slam tennis tournaments, use vision processing and triangulation to assist in umpiring decisions. They are also used in cricket and snooker.
As part of the deal, Sony will acquire all of Hawk-Eye's intellectual property rights and will welcome its 40 full-time employees.
It will be incorporated into Sony Professional, the business-to-business division of Sony Europe.
Naomi Climer, vice-president at Sony Europe, said: "Hawk-Eye presents Sony with the opportunity to acquire a small, innovative company with unique knowledge and excellent growth and synergies potential.
"We see strong opportunities on the technological, business and marketing levels to further Sony's leadership and engagement in the sports and broadcasting industry," she said.
Sony recently announced it will broadcast this year's Wimbledon tournament in high definition 3D to cinemas around the world in partnership with the BBC.
